Ag Policy Intern Scholar Program

The Maddy Institute’s Agricultural Policy Internship Program will offer an exceptional opportunity for Valley students to gain hands-on experience working full-time during the summer with State and Federal agencies that regulate various aspects of California agriculture government that are located in Sacramento. Interns will have the opportunity to: 

  • Gain a deeper understanding of how state and/or federal regulations are promulgated and enforced. 
  • Have direct insight into how a state/federal regulatory agency operates on a daily basis.  
  • Gain insight in how state/federal regulators interact with California’s key agricultural stakeholders and policymakers.
  • Develop public leadership skills to help pursue a career in agricultural policy and advocacy.

This internship is open to all majors.

Responsibilities: Intern responsibilities vary depending on the agency and the department within the agency. Common tasks may include:

  • Conducting research on current agricultural policies, regulations, and issues.
  • Helping analyze the impact that regulatory policies may have on California agriculture (including farmers, consumers, and the environment).
  • Monitor relevant legislation.
  • Working closely with stakeholders, including farmers, industry representatives, and the public, to gather information about the impacts of proposed or existing policies and programs impacting California agriculture.
  • Drafting and editing documents such as policy briefs, newsletters, and press releases.
  • Assisting in the preparation of materials for hearings, meetings, or briefings.
  • Providing administrative support to department staff.
  • Taking on special projects or assignments as directed by staff.
  • Participating in visits to the site (e.g., farm) visits and other agricultural-related events.

Time Period: June through August (full-time position for 8-10 weeks over the Summer)

Scholarship: $6,000 (portion of scholarship will be used for housing expenses)

  • February 29: Priority Deadline at 11:59 pm PST
  • March 7: Final Deadline at 11:59 pm PST

Eligibility:

  • Must have a 3.0 overall GPA or higher
  • Must be at least a Junior in standing (60 units completed) OR be a Graduate student in standing during the semester of the internship.
  • Must be able to work full time over the Summer in Sacramento.
  • Must have a Central Valley connection
